In this course, we will explore an array of tools, materials, techniques, and color palettes, providing you with the opportunity to discover and develop your own unique artistic style.

    Introduction to Watercolours

In this course, you’ll learn the basics of using watercolours with wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques, blending colors, creating simple layers, mark making with different brushes, and other effects. You’ll also see how watercolours can work with other materials to bring depth and interest to your artwork.

    Writing & Lettering

In this course, we’ll explore creative ways to incorporate writing and lettering into your mixed media art. You’ll experiment with techniques like using dip pens for expressive lines, brush pens for bold lettering, stamping, and cut-out words or letters to add texture and depth. These simple methods bring a personal and unique touch to your artwork.

    Colour Theory & Mixing

In this lesson, we’ll explore the basics of colour mixing with watercolour paints by creating colour wheels using cool, warm, and neutral tones. You’ll discover how to mix shades and tints, helping you find your preferred colour palette and expand your understanding of how colours work together in your artwork.

    Brushes & Tools

In this session, we’ll experiment with a variety of brushes and tools to see what kinds of marks they create using watercolour paints, from dots and dashes to circles, lines, curves, and splatters. We’ll also explore creative mark-making using household items to discover new textures and effects for your mixed media art.

    Acrylic Paints

You’ll use a range of brushes and tools to create unique textures and marks, exploring how to use these different materials in your mixed media artwork.

    Printing & Stamping

We will play with gelli plate printing, stamping, and lino cut prints (if time allows) to create a stash of unique collage papers for your mixed media compositions. These custom-made papers and prints that can be incorporated into your art journal or mixed media artwork, adding depth and visual interest to your creations.

    Layering

In mixed media art, we use layers to add depth, colour, and texture to our work. We’ll start with a base layer and then build on top with different materials and techniques. By adding and blending these layers, we create a rich and interesting artwork, finishing with a focal point that brings everything together.

    Texture & Dimension

We will explore a range of techniques to create rich texture and dimension in our artwork. By layering paint, incorporating collage, adding shading, and integrating elements such as stitching or found objects, we will enhance both the physical and visual intrigue of our pieces.

    Composition & Balance

Throughout this course, you’ll learn how to create balanced compositions by arranging colors, textures, and elements in a way that looks pleasing and feels harmonious. You will experiment with the placement of marks and materials to ensure your artwork feels balanced and complete.
